Running in menopause and beyond

Post-menopause training has real advantages most women don't know about. Here's the full picture.

Menopause is not the end of your running story. For many women, it's where it really begins.

Without monthly hormonal cycles, training becomes more consistent and predictable. Many post-menopausal women find they can finally plan and follow a training programme without unexpected difficult weeks.

What changes:

  • Recovery takes longer — plan for it, don't apologise for it
  • Bone density continues to decline without oestrogen support — strength and impact work become essential
  • Tendons and ligaments take longer to warm up — warm-ups need to be 10–15 minutes minimum
  • Hydration needs increase — oestrogen loss reduces thirst sensation, so drink before you feel thirsty

What stays the same:

  • Your aerobic capacity responds to training just as it did before
  • Consistency is still the most powerful training tool
  • You are still an athlete. Nothing about menopause changes that.

The advantages:

  • No luteal phase fatigue or menstrual disruption
  • Lower oestrogen can actually mean less ligament laxity — more structural stability
  • Women who run consistently through and beyond menopause have measurably better bone density and cardiovascular health than those who don't

The practical plan:

  1. Longer warm-ups. Every session, no exceptions.
  2. Two strength sessions per week — bone density is a lifelong project.
  3. Easy runs stay easy. Hard runs stay rare.
  4. Sleep and recovery are training. Protect them.
